GDP should be scrapped, says Sarkozy

The French president Nicolas Sarkozy has backed a report which urges governments to stop using GDP as the primary measure of progress.

The report from a group of economists said gross domestic product was treated too often as the only statistic worth focusing on.

'GDP statistics were introduced to measure market economic activity. But they are increasingly thought of as a measure of societal well-being, which they are not,' the report's authors wrote.

Comfrey - every transitioner should have some..

Hi - I still have industrial quantities of comfrey plants for sale, despite having sold 70 plants already. They are non-seeding, so I think they must be the Bocking 14 variety developed by the Henry Doubleday Association. I'm selling them for £/€ 5 for 10 plants, and can deliver in Derry/Inishowen area. All money goes towards event costs incurred by Transition Derry. Comfrey is a wonderful organic fertilizer and healing plant. The links below provide information on the medicinal,… Continue

Derry after oil?

A message to all members of Transition Derry

Hi everyone

I'm thinking of compiling a booklet to celebrate Transition Derry's first year. I'd really like to have input from as many people as possible - just a few lines would be great, giving your reasons for being involved and also your personal vision for the future - Derry 2025. Where will our food be coming from? How will we heat our homes? Travel to work? Look after our health and well-being? Will we be using money in… Continue

Comfrey plants for sale

To raise funds for Transition Derry I'm selling Russian Comfrey plants - used by organic growers as green fertilizer, they also have powerful medicinal properties. I have several hundred small plants I've grown from cuttings, & I'm selling them for £1 each, £5 for 10, and concessions on even larger quantities. All proceeds will go to Transition Derry. If you'd like some, please contact me on 07812454356 or waynefoord@hotmail.com.

sustainable tip from Transiiton Town Kildare

For a natural alternative to household cleaners mix the juice of a half lemon, 9 drops of thyme essential oil, 500ml of boiled water and a sprig or 2 of thyme for decoration, add to your spray bottle and you have a very effective, sweet smelling anti bacterial household spray.

I'm interested in learning about food we can gather for free in the wild. The Organic Centre in Leitrim has a day course in August. And we can download detailed and useful information with beautiful photos from the Wild Food School. Happy eating!
