Celtic Kiln Workshop Gasyard Centre Derry

Celtic Kiln Project

Dates – Saturday 7th August 10-4pm - Friday 13th August 2-4pm- Saturday August – 10-4pm - Sunday 15th August firing of kiln
that evening.

All workshops will be held at the Gasyard Centre, 128 Lecky Road, Derry. Facilitator for the project is local renowned ceramist Brian Mc Gee

This project will work with local young adult men and women in the community during the fortnight of the Gasyard Feile in order to build a replica Celtic Kiln (circa 600BC) which was used to fire La Tene style
ceramic pottery. The kiln will be made of wooden sods built in a circular dome
and lined with a sand and clay mixture inside the firing chamber.

Four areas the participants will be involved in

1. Workshops will take place during the Feile on above dates during which participants would be invited to make ceramic pots in the style of the Celtic La Tene
originals
2. The Kiln would be constructed by participants in a
designated area within the public space attached to the Gasyard Centre
3. The Kiln will be fired to reach top temperature at
night time when it would have the maximum visual impact.
4. The finished ceramic pieces will form an exhibition
with a video of the firing and information on Celtic
ceramics.
