Focus on Economics Mar/May 09
James Robertson's March 09 newletterreports on the conversation with Marian Farrell on how alternative forms of local exchange (like Timebanks, LETs and Local Currencies like the Totnes £Pound ) can work and do work in parallel with national and international money systems.

In addition we have been looking at JustXchange a Belfast based exchange system based on the currency of time, where your hour equals my hour. Justxchange is an initiative by the Belfast based group Aktivism from the Kitchen Table (AKT)

In this video, Ann Pettifor, co-author of The Green New Deal, addresses the Crunch Time conference in Australia in April. Ann outlines the financial decisions made by UK and US governments which led to widening gaps between asset owners and workers and to Debtonation Day (9th August 2007). She explains how the proposals in The Green New Deal offer an opportunity to create a sustainable economy by investing in environmentally sustainable construction. Ann urges progressive people to grab this opportunity before the financial sector, backed up by uninformed government, returns to 'business as usual'.
Ann Pettifor - The Green New Deal

Listen to the podcast with Richard Douthwaite, economist, writer and one of the founding members of Feasta the Foundation for Economic Sustainability. Richard tells us all about how to get started with our own local currency, gives advice on LETS, Time banks and discussed about an economy system that is not based on debt.
