TRANSITION DERRY – OPEN SPACE EVENT
Saturday 20th June, 10.00am to 3.00PM, in St Columbs Park House
HOW CAN WE SUPPORT THE TRANSITION TO A POSITIVE, LOW-CARBON FUTURE FOR DERRY/LONDONDERRY ?
The twin challenges of climate change and oil scarcity
The challenges presented by climate change and fossil fuel scarcity are perhaps the greatest that humanity has faced. This brings an opportunity for rethinking the way we live and making conscious choices about the kind of community and world we would like to live in.
The event
Simply…..Open Space discussion groups in the morning. Bring and share your lunch. Whole group feedback & next steps after lunch.
What is ‘Open Space '?
Open Space is a simple and powerful way to run productive meetings for five to 2000+ people. The most basic principle is that everyone who comes to an Open Space event must be passionate about the topic and willing to take some responsibility for creating things out of that passion.
One "overarching question" (How can we support the transition to a positive, low-carbon future for Derry/Londonderry ?) provides the starting point for people to cluster in separate discussion groups to address related topics and issues.
Anyone can propose an issue and volunteer to host a discussion. Everyone then chooses which discussion group they want to join. Some "bumblebees" will visit the lot, gathering nectar to distil into a common wisdom. Some "butterflies" will just like to dip into different discussions. Vote with your feet. It's all part of the pattern.
We’ll use flipchart sheets to brainstorm together, and these will be compiled to produce a record of all the discussions. Finally, we’ll gather as one big group to begin pulling the pieces together and to consider what our next steps will be.
The event will be facilitated by Conn Mulvenna, Coordinator of Kilcranny House.
There is no fee for the event, but we would welcome a donation of about £10 per person to cover costs. Please bring and share your lunch ☺.
