Bay Road Park - Family Day Out
Saturday 27 June, 11am - 3pm
Bay Road Park, situated behind Da Vincis Hotel, has been designated as the first Local Nature Reserve in the Derry City Council area and will be launched on Sat 27th June 2009.
As part of this launch, there will be a host of free activities for all the family with the Mad Hatters Tea Party, bird box building, forest schools, guided cycling and nature trails, treasure hunts, face painting, arts and crafts and wildlife identification with RSPB, Loughs Agency & Creggan Country Park. The fun starts at 11 am and continues throughout the day until 3.00 pm.
A Local Nature Reserve is a protected area of land designated by a local authority, because of its biodiversity value, links to the community, accessibility and potential for education. Bay Road Park's location, on the banks of the River Foyle, provides impressive scenic views of the River Foyle and the city. It hosts a range of habitats and species, including grasslands, woodland, mudflats and internationally important populations of birds, protected under the EC Birds Directive.
Greater Shantallow Area Partnership, in partnership with Derry City Council and Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland, secured funding from the Big Lottery (Phase 4) Breathing places programme, to host this launch.
The winners of the Derry City Council Wildlife Photography Competition will be announced at this event. Free parking will be available at Da Vincis Hotel multi storey car park and Ulster Bank and everyone is invited to come along.
