I’m currently doing a PhD at Queens Belfast, researching post-peak oil scenarios and risk management of city-region food security. As part of the research, I’m planning to conduct ‘scenario workshops’ in Derry, Omagh and Belfast. Each workshop will involve about 15 people, and will address the following questions:

• What are the potential impacts of peak oil on food security ?

• How robust and resilient are current policies and practice ? Can they be adapted

I am seeking the support of transition activists and anyone else with an interest in local food production, to take part in a pilot scenario workshop in early May. A more formal scenario workshop is planned for later in the year, and it is intended that this will include local food activists, local & regional government representatives, farmers’ representatives, etc. If you would be interested in taking part in the pilot, please contact me at: wfoord01@qub.ac.uk or mobile 07812454356.

Please encourage others to send in their views too.

There is also brief reference in the plan to 'Development of allotments and urban gardening programme' in the 'Quality Places, Spaces and Neighbourhoods' catalyst programme. An earlier version of the plan had more detail about developing a strategic urban gardening programme, including allotments, community gardens, market gardens, etc. This text appears to have disappeared in the final draft. You might also want to comment on this. Again, please encourage others to send their comments.

Hi - I still have industrial quantities of comfrey plants for sale, despite having sold 70 plants already. They are non-seeding, so I think they must be the Bocking 14 variety developed by the Henry Doubleday Association. I'm selling them for £/€ 5 for 10 plants, and can deliver in Derry/Inishowen area. All money goes towards event costs incurred by Transition Derry. To raise funds for Transition Derry I'm selling Russian Comfrey plants - used by organic growers as green fertilizer, they also have powerful medicinal properties. I have several hundred small plants I've grown from cuttings, & I'm selling them for £1 each, £5 for 10, and concessions on even larger quantities. All proceeds will go to Transition Derry. If you'd like some, please contact me on 07812454356 or waynefoord@hotmail.com.
